Imminent Public Beta
Two years ago we bet on a vision, that “HTML5 would revolutionize the video game market“. A vision that during this time, has been evolving and becoming true. It has been an intense period, full of debate where few stood up for the HTML5 goodnesses, and a great majority who saw their business, their status quo and even their mental structures threatened, undervalued the new standard stigmatizing it as a technology unviable for creating video games. Some bet too soon and failed. Some start up now. The rest prefer to wait.
Here in WiMi5, we think about HTML5 as disruptive technology. A technology born with low features, adopted and tested by some people. As happened in the transition from classic cameras to digital ones, or from mobile phones to smartphones, the process is going slowly. And as such a disruptive tech, it’s improved progressively, taking up little by little the niches where the actual technology has given up, to end up gaining a bigger market share. And this niche is the web games, but not the web as we knew it, but a new one.
The new web is 100% based in standards, with no exclusive technologies which make necessary the installation of plugins in the browser. It’s the web seen and used in every device with contents undistinguishable from the native ones. To where 3 billion users access daily. It’s the quintessential platform. And HTML5 its programming language. The complements needed to play web games, such as Flash, Silverlight, Java applets, etc… are left behind. They are past, even if many find it hard to accept.
That’s why in WiMi5, we don’t believe that HTML5 competes with native games. Actually, we think that the web is the next game platform. A bigger platform, open and full of opportunities. And also based on a standard, what makes it the most democratic and global. But most important, it’s a different platform, purely software, non dependant on any device. And so it can work where HTML5 implementation exists, nowadays every browser on PCs and soon in every device (Apple has confirmed iOS 8 will have it in autumn). It is also ready for the immediate future, including the new devices which are being provided with more intelligence, TVs, watches, glasses and lastly operative systems based on HTML5 like FirefoxOS. However, as in every change process in emerging market means, there is a descending resistance to adopt this platform, mainly due to conservative attitudes but also to the false belief that the probability of profitability in the prevailing market places is bigger. Gardner says we are in the “Trough of Disillusionment” phase. Nevertheless, we believe the cycle change will happen around the end of year 2014, when W3C switches the HTML5 to it’s definitive status, beginning the unavoidable “Slope of Enlightenment”.
In WiMi5 we strongly believe that the future is not what is about to come, but what we are going to look for. This is why, from that vision born 2 years ago, we’ve been researching and developing a new way to understand web games. An integral solution that lets create, publish and monetize games from the web for the web, the easy way, even without the need of programming. After a private beta period, where we’ve checked with developers from all around the world this approach, we are proud to announce that very soon we will launch the first version of the public beta.
Thank you to everyone that has helped us achieving this goal !
